When we visit the Black Forest in Germany, one of the most breathtaking natural phenomena we can witness is the sea of clouds from Feldberg, the highest peak in Baden‑Württemberg at about 1,493 meters.
On cool mornings, mist fills the valleys and creates a spectacular ocean of clouds below the summit. This guide gives us practical details so we can plan our trip efficiently and enjoy every moment of this unforgettable experience.

Best Time to See the Sea of Clouds

To increase our chance of witnessing the cloud sea, we should plan visits in late autumn, winter, and early spring, especially October through April. Early mornings—typically before or just after sunrise—offer the thickest mist layers, providing the most dramatic views. Autumn days are cool and crisp, while winter mornings often have stable cloud formations, creating perfect conditions for photography and nature observation.

Getting to Feldberg: Transport & Costs

By Car:
We can drive from Freiburg im Breisgau to Feldberg in about 45 minutes via scenic mountain roads. Parking near the Feldbergbahn (cable car) station costs around $5–8 per day depending on the season and lot.
By Public Transport:
From Freiburg main station, we can take a regional train to Titisee, then transfer to a local bus toward Feldberg village. Public buses are less frequent on weekends and holidays, so it’s best to check the schedule in advance.
Cable Car (Feldbergbahn):
- Uphill + Downhill + Tower + House of Nature: ~$22 per person
- Uphill Only: ~$15 per person
- Downhill Only: ~$13 per person
Children born between 2007–2019 enjoy reduced rates; younger children often ride free. Dogs and bikes can be transported for around ~$6 extra.
- Opening Hours: Typically 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., extended to 6:00 p.m. in summer.
The cable car significantly reduces hiking time to the summit observation area, which is ideal for catching sunrise views.

Hiking Trails & Summit Views

Once we reach the summit or nearby areas, several well-marked trails allow us to explore:
- Summit Trail: Moderate, ~30–40 minutes to the main viewpoint.
- Seebuck Circular Walk: Easy, family-friendly, ~40 minutes.
- Baldenweger Buck Ridge Trail: Longer, ~1 hour with panoramic views.
Trail conditions can vary with weather, so wearing sturdy walking shoes and layered clothing is recommended.

- Arrive early: 60–90 minutes before sunrise gives the best light and cloud formations.
- Check the weather: Cloud sea forms under temperature inversion conditions—cold nights and warm valleys.
- Layer clothing: Summit temperatures can be 5–10°C cooler; windproof jackets, hats, and gloves are recommended.
- Photography: A tripod and wide-angle lens enhance sunrise shots.
- Cash on hand: Some huts and small restaurants prefer cash payments.
